Abstract

Purpose: To determine quantitatively changes of portal venous blood flow by duplex sonography in patients with liver cirrhosis.
Materials and Methods: Thirty-five patients with liver cirrhosis were measured portal venous flow volume, velocity and diameter by duplex sonography. Twenty-four healthy volunteers were studied as control. The patients with liver cirrhosis were divided into two group according to Child classification (Child A, 23; Chid B or C, 12). They were kept off a diet for more than 8 hours. Each examination was performed with an HDI-5000 (ATL Inc, Bothell, Washington, USA) and 5-2 §Ö curved transducer.
Results: Mean portal venous flow volume in patients with liver cirrhosis was 297.79 ¡¾ 131.1 ml/min. On the while, that of control group was 530.3 ¡¾ 264.9 ml/min (p<0.001). Portal venous flow velocity was 10.28 ¡¾ 3.71 §¯/sec in patients with liver cirrhosis and 14.63 ¡¾ 3.83 §¯/sec in control group (p<0.05). Portal vein diameter was 0.79 ¡¾ 0.15 §¯ in patients with liver cirrhosis and 0.78 ¡¾ 0.11 §¯ in healthy volunteer (p=0.96). Of the patients with liver cirrhosis, mean portal venous flow volume was 330.53 ¡¾ 135.09 ml/min in patients with Child A, while 232.05 ¡¾ 98.32 ml/min in patients with Child B or C (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Portal blood flow volume and velocity were markedly decreased in patients with liver cirrhosis. While diameter of main portal vein didn¡¯t show significant changes. According to Child classification, the portal flow volume was decreased significantly. Duplex sonography seems to be an useful tool in evaluation of portal venous changes quantitatively in patients with liver cirrhosis.
